You may have deduced from my lack of posts over the past few weeks that I had nothing to say.

That would be wrong.

Rather, I’ve simply been afraid of saying it.

Well, after spending most of the day laying on the couch nursing a headache (the caffeine-laced “Headache Relief” pills and a glass of water finally knocked it out), I’m cranky enough to start spilling it.

By way of re-introduction, please know that I write about what I know, what I’ve experienced. If you’re looking for the typical “you’re here to serve, and give before you receive” marketing blog, go read Seth Godin. He’s a better writer anyway. If you’re looking for the “seven easy steps to building your marketing empire,” go read one of the IM gurus like Rich Schefren or, better yet, John Reese when he gets around to actually writing something. Although a bit of all that stuff is part of my experience, I’m not here for that.

This site is generally about Internet Marketing and other stuff and how it relates to my life. In other words, it’s about me. But not really.

Speaking of that, if the whole “Matt Gordon: The Official Website” thing didn’t strike you as at least a little bit icky, this site may not be for you, either. It was a dig at all the pompous, self-centered sites (especially blogs) I see around the Internet these days, but nobody got the joke. Probably my fault, but I think it’s sad that everyone seems to swallow that much arrogance without even blinking these days.

So, yeah, you got it: this isn’t your standard “sit around drinking steamed milk or whatever that crap is” marketing blog. I’d like to think it’s a bit more authentic than that. I’ll do my best to keep it that way. Enjoy the ride!

Or don’t.

I’ll be back soon with a post that’s actually about something. See you then.

Yeah, so it’s been a while since I’ve posted. I’ve been busy, but in a good way.

So what’s been keeping me out of trouble?

Well, work of course. Ever since I got back from vacation in France (now two months ago, if you can believe that), I’ve been incredibly busy. Lots of good projects, and I’d like to think I’ve been really productive.

I’ve been taking a lot of walks through my neighborhood at night. It’s been just beautiful outside in the evening.

I’ve been reading, of course. And kayaking, of course. Wild hornets couldn’t pull me away from those two activities.

I’m also building an e-commerce store in my spare time. I’ll provide a link from the blog when it’s ready for prime time. Should be sometime this month, if all goes well.

I’ve also been doing a bit of TV-watching. Eureka has turned out to be a really cool show, as well as the British comedy The IT Crowd. Speaking of British comedy, I’d be remiss if I didn’t express my love for Little Britain.

I’m heading to Atlanta in about a month for an Internet Marketing conference. I’m sure I’ll learn a lot, and I’ll share some ideas with you after I get back.

Oh, one more thing… I took some time to contemplate applying internally for a job in southern France. There were three things that held me back:

I don’t want to move to France.

I’m ridiculously and undeservedly happy where I am, both in my work situation as well as my living arrangements. Why would I change anything?

I don’t want to move to France.

It’s not that I don’t like France — quite the contrary — but I just don’t want to have to deal with the hassle, expense, and other obstacles of picking up my entire life and moving there. Not. At. All.

So that’s the view from here. What are you working on?

–Matt

Yes, I was one of those folks that got up before the chickens (if I had any chickens) and stood in a line to be one of the first to get the new iPhone. Specifically, I arrived at the mall at a little after 5 AM for the 7 AM opening.

I’ve been an iPhone owner since July 2007, when I picked up the 4 Gb version of the original, so I’m pretty well versed on how these little devices can take over your life. That said, was the new iPhone 3GS worth it?

Oh yeah.

Here are my thoughts of some of the new features I’ve tried out so far:

Since “the ‘S’ stands for ‘Speed,’” that is something we would naturally want to know about. It’s fast. The keyboard doesn’t sometimes lag like previous models, the web pages and email loads a whole lot faster.

Video recording: Pretty neat! Record a video by clicking the Camera icon, switching the slider to the movie camera, and then start recording. After the filmmaking is over, the would-be Michael Bay can review it.

If editing is needed, the beginning and end points can be trimmed. But be careful; once you trim the video, the discarded segments are gone forever. After that, it’s a one-click upload to MobileMe or YouTube.

Landscape keyboard: Works as advertised. Not much more to say.

Compass: Susceptible to interference from metal object, but could very well keep you from getting lost in the woods. Why this is a standalone app and not simply an add-on to the Google Maps app is something I don’t entirely understand.

Voice Control: Perfect? No, but this kind of thing never is. But works pretty well. The smartest thing is that as the feature comes up, possible phrases scroll across the screen. It was very useful for when I wanted to try the feature out and didn’t know what to say.

Copy and Paste: Very smartly implemented! I haven’t used it as much as I thought I would, but I’m quite glad it’s there for when I need it.

Summary: I’m not sure this is an extremely compelling upgrade from iPhone 3G, but the leap from the original iPhone to iPhone 3GS has been very satisfying. I’m especially looking forward to the the apps that will take advantage of the new features.
